Wedding dress carriage?

suit luggage
Fudgecake asked:

Me and my fiance have just organised our wedding for next year and we will be going to Greece. I just wondered if anyone knew of how we would transport the dress and grooms suit, a simple cover doesn’t seem enough, are there cases of some sort that the dress and grooms suit can be transported in? How does this work on the actual plane, do they put them in the hold with all the other cases etc. Normally you are only allowed one piece of luggage for going abroad, obviously they would be extra to our normal baggage, so how does that work? If someone could help me out that would be great as its a bit of a worry. Thank you.

A friend of mine took her wedding dress with her in a zipped coverbag as carry-on luggage. She could also bring her purse with her. She did have to check in her other bags though.

It could be very dependant on airline, give them a call or visit their website to make sure

Can you ship it to the hotel ahead of you?

    Congratulations on your wedding!

The best way to get transport your wedding dress will be to ship it out to the hotel at least a week before your wedding day. Sounds scarey but it would be the least hassle.

Make sure you pack your dress up well if you are going to send it. Pack the dress with lots of tissue paper to reduce wrinkles, put into dress box, put dress box into bin bag or similiar incase of moisture, address correctly!

Speak with the postage company and make sure you get fully covered insurance, you will want the dress to asrrive a week in advance to avoid any errors. Ask someone at the hotel to receive it and hang it up to reduce wrinkles.

If you don’t want to ship it you will need to check with the airline if they can fit it in the hold, small planes won’t have the space. If you can hang it up take a dress carrier, if it will have to go in the overhead locker put it in a dress box to avoid it getting squashed.

If you have to check it in you will want it packed in your wedding box with tissue paper, surround the box with other small clothes to stop it rattling about and put in a hard suitcase.

See if you can get a small steam cleaner to take with you to get rid of any creases.

Don’t forget the grooms clothes and all of your extras!

    Have a great day.

Buy two good garment bags from a reputable luggage company. Then put the wedding gown in one and the groom’s suit in the other. You can take them aboard and they will be hung in the front by the stewardess. You are allowed two pieces of luggage each. Make the garment bag the 2nd piece which you will carry on. Make sure you tell the attendant when you are checking in that in the garment bags is a wedding gown and suit and that you welcome them to open them. Also, you could check the garment bag in also. Good luck to you and your fiance.
