I will be flying for the first time in 2 weeks- I have a few questions?

xoquincyxo asked:

In two weeks I will be flying with a friend of mine to Texas to see her grandparents. It will be my first time flying and I’m really excited. Anyway, I have a few questions….

About how long would a non-stop flight from Detroit to Texas (I’m not sure which city) be?

I really would rather not check my luggage. Would a standard size rolling suit case be small enough for me to carry on?

Do I need any type of identification (birth certificate, ID, etc.)?

Are there any security no-nos? I mean aside from the obvious.

Anything else I need to know.

no idea how long the flight is…should be on your papers with your ticket….a small carry on should be enough…how many clothes do you need is the question..you should have a state issued id..and no liquids…other than small ones i believe its still being enforced go to the website of the airport for all of those…just relax..thats the big thing and get there in plenty of time to check in

Texas is a huge state and it’s impossible to guess what the weather will be; I doubt it will be as cold as Detroit but that’s always a possibility too. Ask your friend what clothing she’s taking. A standard sized suitcase must be checked; it’s too large for the overhead bin and probably too heavy for you to lift it up anyway. Get to the airport about 2 hours in advance of your flight. You need a photo ID if you have one, or else your parents should be there (sorry, you don’t give your age). If you have medication you can’t do without, carry that in your purse in case your suitcase gets lost (happens, but not often). Don’t joke about bombs. Wear shoes that are easy to get off and on as you’re required to run those through x-ray, as well as remove metal from your body. If you have metal internally (from surgery) get a letter from your doctor to show. After you get through security you can buy drinks or food and take on-board with you. You can buy meals on-board too; they generally provide sodas and juices – you can ask for the whole can, rather than the tiny cups they give. Have fun! The first time I flew I was told they’d make me put on a leather aviator cap – hahaha…

Don’t know the flight time. Could be 3 hours or so.

The standard size limit for a carry on is 45 linear inches (height plus width plus depth). Check with your airline to see if they have different limitations.

Government-issued ID; driver’s license is fine.

Here’s the list of allowed and prohibited items when going through security:

Get there at least two hours early, especially if this is your first time.

Get your boarding pass online. You can get it 24 hours before your flight by going to the website of your airline and putting in your confirmation number. Just print it out.

If you’re not checking any baggage, you can just go directly through security. If you are checking it, if there’s curbside check-in, use it. Be sure to tip $2/bag.

Your airline ticket will tell you how long the flight is. I would guess about 2-1/2 to 3 hours.

Your carry-on cannot be more than 45 linear inches (Length + Width + Depth) on most airlines. The airline web site will specifically tell you what size carry-on they will allow.

Also remember that you cannot carry any liquids or gels in containers (bottles) bigger than 3 ounces-clearly marked and they must fit in a quart size zip-loc bag. Those have to be removed from your carry-on bag for a visual inspection. So go to the drug store and buy those trial size bottles of shampoo, mouthwash, toothpaste, lotion, etc. and you will be okay.

You should always carry a picture ID with you. If you have a drivers license, that should suffice, but taking your birth certificate with a raised seal would not hurt either.

Everything from your coat, purse, carry-on, etc. has to be placed on the conveyor belt to be X-rayed. The last time I flew, they made everyone remove their shoes and throw them into the bucket for X-ray. Don’t wear alot of metal or you will have to be pulled off to the side to be hand-searched. Not a horrible thing, but it does delay you. Just cooperate with the security personnel, they are doing their job and are usually pretty nice, but can get down-right nasty if you start to give them lip.

Look at the boarding pass it will tell you the depart time and the arrive time. You will need to show your drivers license to TSA. A small suicase will be counted as a carry on. They have bins that say how big your carry on can be. A carry on is about 27 inches by 16 inches. Yes, there are they are all over the airport. Print your boarding pass.
